Music Therapy FAQ’s
April 2026 | by Adanna Mize
In my time as a Music Therapist, I’ve noticed people often have the same questions about what I do. So I’m going to answer some of those questions here.
Q. What do you do as a Music Therapist?
I use music to help individuals meet non-musical goals. We can work on goals that fit into categories like: motor, social-emotional, cognitive/academic, and communication. We might sing, play instruments, move to music, write songs, or a combination of these and more. The possibilities are endless!
Q. Who can be in Music Therapy?
I chose to specialize in working with children who have ADHD, Autism Spectrum, Down Syndrome, etc. However, I have experience with various populations like rehabilitation/procedure support, behavioral health, special education, hospitals, & long term care. Music Therapy can be great for those who already receive services like PT, OT, and speech, but that’s not a requirement.
Q. What are specific examples of what Music Therapy can support?
Some common examples are attention to task, self regulatory skills, language development, fine/gross motor skills, relaxation, emotional processing, and building confidence in self identity. In my clinical experience, these are areas I’ve addressed in all the populations I’ve worked with.
Q. Did you go to school for Music Therapy?
Yes! I went to Southwestern Oklahoma State University and received my bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy. During my undergraduate studies I completed 1,200 hours of clinical work including a 6 month internship. After I finished school, I became Board Certified through the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Following that certification, I became a Licensed Professional Music Therapist through the Oklahoma State Medical Board. Both the board certification and licensure are required in the state of Oklahoma to practice Music Therapy.
While these questions just skim the surface of music therapy, I hope this gave you a better picture of how vast my scope can be. I always love sharing more about this amazing profession. We’ve been posting content on our socials highlighting Music Therapy, so go check it out to learn more.
