Practice is PLAY

Helping Parents Support Their Students by PLAYing

February 2026 | by Alyssa Sonnier

When we think of “practice,” it’s easy to picture drills, repetition, and pressure to get things right. At Oklahoma Academy of Music and Fine Arts, we see it differently.

Practice is play.

Real learning happens through curiosity, discovery, and experimentation. When children are given space to explore — to try something new, make mistakes, and follow their interests — practice becomes something they want to do, not something they have to do.

At home, we encourage families to be involved in practice, but not as drill sergeants or referees. Instead, we invite you to be partners in play. Sit with your child. Ask questions. Listen. Wonder out loud. Try things together. Celebrate effort, not perfection.

Here is something for parents to try at home by simply remembering P.L.A.Y.

P: Process. Focus on the how, not just the result. Learning is a long journey that is more enjoyable when we work on and understand the process.
L: Low Pressure. Remember that mistakes are welcome and an integral part of the learning process.
A: Ask Questions. Spark curiosity and provide support or encouragement by asking questions.
Y: Yes, and… Encourage exploration and discovery instead of shutting it down. Even better, join them in the discovery process!

Our goal is to make learning feel natural and joyful. When practice is playful and pressure-free, motivation grows, frustration decreases, and students are far more likely to stay engaged for the long term.

Learning that feels good lasts longer — and that’s what we’re aiming for.
