Meet the Team: Adanna Mize, LPMT, MT-BC

January 2026 | by Alyssa Sonnier

With the announcement of the official launch of our Music Therapy Program, we found it only fitting to introduce you to our incredible music therapist, Adanna Mize, LPMT, MT-BC (Licensed Professional Music Therapist, Music Therapist-Board Certified.) If you ask any of the co-founders of OAMFA what we think of Adanna, you’ll be quickly met with adjectives, such as incredible, confident, competent, authentic, compassionate, genuine. And we think, given the chance to sit down with Adanna or watch her sessions in action, that you would agree. Barring an actual sitdown with her, we conducted a short interview to share with you that will help give a glimpse into why we think she is so special and why you should too.

Adanna began playing the piano at age 3 as it was a family requirement, but continued as she got older because playing instruments was cool to her and played more than 5 different instruments over the years. Her path to Music Therapy wasn't straightforward and included many small moments that directed her forward; however, there was one defining moment she recollected: her first time hearing the words “Music Therapy.” Her mother shared a newspaper article with her regarding SWOSU’s Music Therapy Program when Adanna was around 16 years old. Adanna recalled “And I was like, okay, yeah, that's what I'm going to do.” To her, it’s not a profession - it’s a calling. She had never heard of Music Therapy, nor did she know what it entailed yet, but she said that somehow “it made sense.”

Now that she’s practicing Music Therapy, we asked Adanna what she loves most about it. Her response was beautiful and we’d like to share a direct quote: “Everyone has a music that they love, a type of music, an artist, whatever that may be. So getting to use something that they love and that they're passionate about to help them in all areas of their life is like the biggest responsibility and honor. For it to be a job is - that's not enough of a title for it… It's kind of heavy for it to be like, such, such a big responsibility, but.. that's also what drives you and keeps you passionate is, you know it's something that they love. So they're automatically going to be more open to growth in their life. It's amazing.”

Beyond the individual goals that are set for each client in Music Therapy, Adanna hopes that from her sessions, each person is able to take away the message that they can be themselves regardless of what society says about them. She wants parents and/or clients to know that no prior music experience is required and that everyone is welcome. She, along with the administration, will help guide and support clients and their families through each step of the process. She also encourages parents to help their children sing at home, to sing with daily tasks, and to give them space when asking them to do a musical task.

Adanna’s Music Therapy style is playful and infuses each interaction with joy, engagement, and learning. She has sessions available on Tuesdays and Fridays. She also teaches Adapted Piano Lab Classes that are non-music therapy classes, but have adaptive techniques to learn the piano. These classes are also available on Tuesdays and Fridays. If you have more questions for Adanna, you can reach out to the administrative office at info@okfinearts.com.
